Phenominal Concert!

I had a real good time with this blu-ray that features a great PQ (AVC coding) and amazing AQ (DTS-HD MA 5.1/2.0). I almost felt like “being there”. The combined showcase from Chicago & EWF is very entertaining and enjoyable. You can’t just sit down and watch; you will find yourself stand up and shake your body (like all the audience in the Greek Theatre)! I have been a big fan of EWF’s and the band is simply amazing in the concert even without Maurice White. Philip Bailey is such a great musician with his great voice and covers M. White’s spot very well. He also can play the kalimba as Mr. White does! V. White, who is co-leader and plays the bass, makes us smile and happy with his passionate gestures. As for Chicago, I have to admit I wished Peter Cetera had been there. They are still good but, to me, not enough without the former lead singer. Before I watched the concert, I had no idea what had made these two bands do a concert together. Now I know they have some connections: both of them are brass bands and EWF’s “After the love has gone”, which the both bands sing and play together, was co-written by Chicago’s Bill Champlin.

Here’s my conclusion: get this blu-ray and have a great time especially when you want “cheer-up” and dance!

A small-time crook takes on a bank heist when an old friend offers him an inside track to the vault. Along with his hastily assembled team of low-rung criminals Terry (Statham) finds himself deep into this real-life heist and quite suddenly the target of ruthless mobsters the police government officials at the highest level and even the royal family.

A cheerful, energetic, and completely entertaining movie, The Bank Job follows some small-time hoods who think they’ve lucked into a big-time opportunity when they learn a bank’s security system will be temporarily suspended–little suspecting that they’re being manipulated by government agents for their own ends. The result is that the movie doubles its pleasures: While the robbery itself has the usual suspense of a heist film, when the robbery is over the hoods find themselves being hunted by the police, the government, and brutal criminal kingpins who were storing dangerous information in a safety deposit box.

The Bank Job won’t win any awards, but it’s enormously fun. Director Roger Donaldson (No Way Out, Species) propels the action along with vigor, editing zippily with perfect clarity among multiple storylines and various colorful characters. Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter), as the leader of the bank robbers, successfully steps away from his usual bone-crunching roles to a more human presence. The rest of the cast–including Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea), Keeley Hawes (Tipping the Velvet), David Suchet (Poirot), and many faces familiar from British film and television–give their characters the right degree of personality and flavor without getting fussy or detracting from the headlong rush of the story. A little sex, a lot of action, a sly sense of humor, and a twisty plot; if more movies had these basic pleasures, the world would be a happier place.

A refreshing surprise…exciting and thoroughly entertaining!

THE BANK JOB is a bit of a throwback to a different kind of crime movie. In this day and age, most heist movies are super high-tech (THE ITALIAN JOB, any of the OCEAN’S movies) and usually an occasion for big name stars to do a little slumming. They may be lots of fun, but they are also sleek and modern. But THE BANK JOB takes place in 1970, and it is a gritty little period piece.

There’s no mistaking it for a film actually MADE in 1970. There’s too much graphic sex and nudity, the language is too harsh. Also, star Jason Statham’s hair isn’t what you’d see in the 70s. But it feels very specific to its time and is refreshingly low tech. Jackhammers, shovels, walkie-talkies. It’s in a time WAY before computers on every desk and cell phones in every pocket. No internet. No email. Just rotary dial telephones. A time before criminals worried about leaving DNA evidence behind.

It’s based on or inspired by the true story of the most lucrative bank robbery in British history (some 4 million pounds). The robbers dug a tunnel underneath a couple of shops and emerged beneath the vault of a branch of Lloyds bank. They opened all the safety deposit boxes and disappeared with a wide and sundry list of items. Apparently, many, many of the box owners declined to tell what items were stolen from them, so the filmmakers have created a rather elaborate scheme involving blackmail, homegrown terrorists, prostitution and miscellaneous indiscretions at the highest levels of government to “explain” why so many folks were too ashamed to admit what they kept stored in the vault. It’s a complex little plot, but it is neatly put together and actually fairly fun to follow.

In the darkest of Knights…

With The Dark Knight just around the corner, Warner Bros. and DC has released another more than solid, direct to DVD animated feature with Batman: Gotham Knight. A collection of six interlocking stories featuring various writing and animator talent, Gotham Knight gets off to a bit of a rocky start, but winds up being a thoroughly entertaining ride while it lasts. “Have I Got a Story For You”, with a script from A History of Violence screenwriter Josh Olson, revolves around a group of kids and their stories about encountering Batman in action. The story and animation here aren’t really anything special, but thankfully things get better from here on forward. “Crossfire”, with a script from acclaimed comic writer Greg Rucka, finds detectives Allen and Ramirez caught in the middle of a gang-war between mob factions, with Batman in the middle as well. “Field Test”, with a script from Jordan Goldberg, features a ridiculously young Bruce Wayne putting new gadgets from Lucius Fox to use, while Batman Begins and Blade writer David Goyer contributes the excellent “In Darkness Dwells”, where Batman takes on the Scarecrow and Killer Croc. Comic writer Brian Azzarello contributes “Working Through Pain”, which is an intriguing look at Bruce’s past lessons to overcome physical pain, and the excellent finale entitled “Deadshot” is written by classic animated series writer Alan Burnett and features a bloody face-off between Batman and the gun-toting assassin of the title name. The various animation techniques used throughout may not be everyone’s cup of tea (some will certainly thrill you more than others), but as a whole Gotham Knight is a dark (and surprisingly violent) blast. The Two-Disc Special Edition features some spectacular extras that are worth the price of admission alone, including a fascinating documentary going over Batman’s rogues gallery, a documentary about Batman creator Bob Kane, and four great episodes from the classic 90’s animated series. All in all, Batman: Gotham Knight will tide you over (briefly) during the wait for The Dark Knight, and Batman fans should definitely give it a look.

Be warned however if you’re a parent: Gotham Knight is a surprisingly mature and violent animated feature that more than likely should not be viewed by young children.

“I bought a car. Turned out to be an alien robot. Who knew?” deadpans Sam Witwicky, hero and human heart of Michael Bay’s rollicking robot-smackdown fest, Transformers. Witwicky (the sweetly nerdy Shia LaBeouf, channeling a young John Cusack) is the perfect counterpoint to the nearly nonstop exhilarating action. The plot is simple: an alien civil war (the Autobots vs. the evil Decepticons) has spilled onto Earth, and young Sam is caught in the fray by his newly purchased souped-up Camaro. Which has a mind–and identity, as a noble-warrior robot named Bumblebee–of its own. The effects, especially the mind-blowing transformations of the robots into their earthly forms and back again, are stellar.

For centuries, two races of robotic aliens–the Autobots and the Decepticons–have waged a war, with the fate of the universe at stake. When the battle comes to Earth, all that stands between the evil Decepticons and ultimate power is a clue held by young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf). An average teenager, Sam is consumed with everyday worries about school, friends, cars and girls. Unaware that he alone is mankind’s last chance for survival, Sam and his friend Mikaela (Megan Fox) find themselves in a tug of war between the Autobots and Decepticons. With the world hanging in the balance, Sam comes to realize the true meaning behind the Witwicky family motto–”No sacrifice, no victory!”

Fans of the earlier film and TV series will be thrilled at this cutting-edge incarnation, but this version should please all fans of high-adrenaline action. Director Bay gleefully salts the movie with homages to pop-culture touchstones like Raiders of the Lost Ark, King Kong, and the early technothriller WarGames. The actors, though clearly all supporting those kickass robots, are uniformly on-target, including the dashing Josh Duhamel as a U.S. Army sergeant fighting an enemy he never anticipated; Jon Voight, as a tough yet sympathetic Secretary of Defense in over his head; and John Turturro, whose special agent manages to be confidently unctuous, even stripped to his undies. But the film belongs to Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, and the dastardly Megatron–and the wicked stunts they collide in all over the globe. Long live Transformers!

“I’ll take the Blu-Ray special, with two disks, please…”,

I’ve always been the type of movie-goer who attends films with the sole purpose of being entertained. I don’t plop down my hard-earned cash at the theater to experience a profound experience, or to empathize with Academy Award-winning noteworthy acting performances, or to scrutinize just how many plot holes there were in any given movie. I leave all that huffy junk to self-important artsy reviewer-folk who like to believe they’re more important than they really are.

“This movie is a profound experience.” Yawn.
“The actors gave noteworthy performances; dare I say, Academy Award-like.” Whatever.
“There were enough plot holes in this film to keep construction crews busy for a week!” Sure.

Yeah, you go ahead and write your self-righteous reviews. Nobody cares. I attend films to be entertained, plain and simple. Nothing more, nothing less. As long as I’ve been entertained, been allowed to escape the dregs of living in the real world for a couple of hours, then I leave the theater satisfied. And, I gotta say, “Transformers” entertained the bejeezus out of me.

I’m not even going to pretend to be unbiased here. Looking for such a review? Then scroll down to more appropriate artsy, self-righteous fare. Because there gonna be whole lots of “Tranformers” lovin’ goin’ on right here.

When this movie came out in July, 2007, I only had a vague idea of the “Transformers” concept. I did not watch the cartoon as a child, nor did I play with the toys. The only “Transformers” experience I can remember as a kid was reading a comic book one time where some robot named Optimus Prime sacrificed himself to save all his robot friends. So, essentially, I went into this movie not knowing what to expect. What I got, friends, was darn near two hours of wall-to-wall entertainment…and what was, for me, the best movie-going experience of all 2007.

Don’t get me wrong. There were a LOT of great movies in 2007. I saw more movies at the theater last year than any other year COMBINED. I hardly ever used to attend the theater. But of all the films that entertained me last year (from “TMNT”…to “Spider-Man 3″…to “Enchanted”…to “Juno”), and there were several dozen, “Transformers” was THEE movie-going experience for me.

I loved the characters, the action, the humor, the music. ALL OF IT. I, for one, can’t wait for the sequel in the summer of 2009. In the interim, I’ll just have to satisfy myself with the Blu-Ray release of this extraordinary movie, which has been a long time coming for anyone who loves this film as much as I do.

As a final thought, let me just say that I felt this movie was a profound experience, where each and every one of the actors gracing the silver screen gave noteworthy performances (dare I say it, Academy Award-winning?!), and you’ll be hard-pressed to locate any construction crews to fix the plot holes in this film because…well…there be none!

Thus ends my self-righteous, all-important, artsy-fluff review.

The adventures of J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones), two federal agents aka, The Men in Black, who are assigned to investigate all alien related phenomena. The agents uncover an intergalactic plot to assasinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies who happen to reside in New York City. Jay and Kay’s mission is to foil the plot by tracking down the terrorist, thereby preventing the earth from being destroyed.

This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith’s engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There’s lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith’s character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast–including Vincent D’Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human–hold up their end splendidly.

What if those tabloid space alien stories were true? Blu-ray due out June 17th–Update on image/sound

Men In Black is a spoof/sci-fi/action flick about a super-secret cross between the Immigration and Naturalization Service, FBI X-Files division, and a disinformation office. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are, respectively, a seasoned agent and a new recruit who work to find, legalize, track and police aliens from other worlds, and to hide the fact that such aliens exist. Aliens are given disguises and allowed to live among us as long as they don’t cause too much trouble. There is apparently a lot of latitude in enforcing that requirement, since it turns out that Newt Gingrich, Sylvester Stallone and Dennis Rodman are actually aliens.

Beyond that set-up, the plot exists mainly as a vehicle on which to hang a bunch of gags, some very odd characters, and action sequences. And that’s enough. The heroes fight aggressor aliens and save the Earth and a very small galaxy while remaining (mostly) cool and making wisecracks. What more could you ask for?

This is a fun movie with lots of elaborate special effects and sets that ought to really benefit from the hi-def treatment. The new Blu-ray release will have a bunch of special features, but only a few not taken from previous releases. Here are the new features […]

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight’s emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents’ murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That’s good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997’s Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?

Genius of mystery and intrigue Christopher Nolan (MEMENTO, FOLLOWING, INSOMNIA) helms this prequel to the Batman films based on the DC Comics series, explaining how Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale)–the billionaire prince of Gotham whose parents were killed in an alleyway mugging–transformed into the crime-fighting superhero. With flashbacks to his privileged childhood, young Master Wayne, as he is called by the butler Alfred (Michael Caine), develops a terrible fear of bats when he falls through the backyard garden into a hidden cave. As a young adult, Wayne lives among the League of Shadows, a martial arts group in the mountains of Asia. His leaders Ra’s al Ghul (Ken Watanabe) and Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson) teach him strength, endurance, and–unfortunately–evil, against which he naturally rebels. An attitude of grave seriousness elevates BATMAN BEGINS above more cartoony Batman movies, as Nolan crafts a dark drama that thrives on sci-fi intrigue. Bale strides into the role with grace, adding refinement that is seldom seen in action-oriented films. And while the action scenes explode with high-tech glitz and fast-moving thrills, they are evenly placed among sequences of plot and character development, making for a complex and satisfying viewing experience.

Flesh and Machinery

Christopher Nolan and his co-screenwriter, David Goyer have chosen to postpone the crossover of Bruce Wayne (a soulful Christian Bale) into Batman until half way through the new “Batman Begins.”
And this is a crucial and important step that Nolan puts off until Bruce walks the earth in search of his own personal nirvana… in a sort of Christ-like journey to understand himself and his place in the world after his parents are brutally murdered. It is also from this quest that he acquires the knowledge and skills necessary for him to become a warrior, ready and able to combat the ills and rid his town Gotham of all evil-doers.

Nolan’s “Batman Begins” is a more macho, masculine film than were the previous movies, which is not to take anything away from Tim Burton’s elegiac, gothic and visionary takes on this story. But Burton’s world is/was/ and will always be the world of the dreamer: his Batman is more sinned against than sinning. His Batman needs love and understanding while Nolan’s wants and needs justice and revenge more than anything else: even the sultry Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes proves to be of little interest to Batman save a chaste kiss at the end of the movie. It’s interesting to note that in the previous Batman films we had big beautiful bombshells like Kim Bassinger and Nicole Kidman as the so-called love interests while here, in Nolan’s vision we have a more scrubbed clean, working class (Rachel is an assistant D.A.) heroine: a woman who is as interested in righting wrongs as is Batman and not merely someone meant as an adornment to the suave debonair Batman of Val Kilmer, George Clooney or Michael Keaton. It’s an important and telling shift from woman as a plush toy to one who is, not only beautiful but also smart and dedicated to a cause other than self-promotion and self-satisfaction.

Christian Bale’s Batman is real..i.e. a genuine, fleshed-out, beautifully written movie character: he is conflicted, he makes mistakes, he trusts the wrong people at times and he pays for his mistakes. It is a remarkable casting coup to have Bale in this role particularly since of late he has been playing a spate of radicals…i.e. in “The Machinist,” in which he transforms himself into a skeleton…literally. As Bruce Wayne/Batman, Bale dons the mask, assumes the persona, not out of a lust for power but out of a fervent belief that good will always triumph over evil: several times in this film he is brought to task for his trust in the basic goodness of people and one of his mentors ( Liam Neeson as Ducard) even goes so far as to ridicule Bruce as sentimental and weak for it. Though Ducard is his mentor and sensei, this relationship proves to be fraught with ambiguity as the movie progresses to the climax.

What is a Batman film without its villains? But this film is devoid of the cartoon craziness of the Riddler or the Joker. Here we have Cillian Murphy (so good in “28 Days Later”) as a scary-as-hell The Scarecrow, alias psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Crane, who spews his psychedelic paranoia and psychosis on an unsuspecting Gotham. His “stuff” is more thrilling and frightening than anything that the aforementioned villains could ever muster.
“Batman Begins” is not only a physically gorgeous film, it is also an emotionally and ideologically complicated one. It wears its heart on its sleeve, yes…but it also has the brains and a profoundly strong back and pumped up physicality to back it up.

In the ongoing deluge of comic-book adaptations, Hellboy ranks well above average. Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy’s origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin–in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs–opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns (”to fit in,” says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys.

The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola’s original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He’s red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart.

From visionary writer and director Guillermo del Toro comes Hellboy, a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola’s popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom, who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom’s secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic “Mer-Man” Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman, the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that theyprotect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.

Love it even more now!

First saw it in the theater and thought to myself “What a mess of a movie”. It is all over the place. Saw the director’s cut on dvd and thought to myself, much better. Character development was apparently stripped from the theatrical release. Now I see the same Director’s Cut in BLU-RAY……WOW!!! Seeing it again on a big screen TV in high definition is the way to go with this movie. It seems the more I watch it, the more I fall in love with it. The video looks absolutely stunning. This is now one of my favorite show-off films in blu-ray. Friends and family come over and want to watch something on my setup, Hellboy is now my film of choice. As an action flick, the sound is just to die for. Special effects and fight scene audio take the movie to another level. I show it off with the 5.1 PCM and it never lets me down. A friend of mine came over and said he didn’t like the movie before, but after watching it again on my ps3 with big screen and surround sound, even he said it’s great.

In I AM LEGEND, Will Smith joins the ranks of Vincent Price (in 1964’s THE LAST MAN ON EARTH) and Charlton Heston (in 1971’s OMEGA MAN) as the star of an adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name. Often surprising in its focus on loneliness and loss, this thoughtful, eerie, and restrained sci-fi horror film provides a parade of startling visuals, but never allows special effects to overcome the human element. Smith, in a strong performance very different from his usual persona, is Robert Neville, the lone survivor in a New York City where streets are overgrown and deer gambol among deserted automobiles. Following an epidemic, the Earth’s population has been turned into an army of nocturnal zombies. Immune to the virus, military scientist Neville searches for a cure in his Washington Square townhouse. Haunted by visions of his family leaving quarantined Manhattan two years prior, he drives through the city with his German Shepherd, Sam, by day and barricades his home from the monsters nightly. But when Anna (Alice Braga)–another immune stranger-finds him, they will have to fight the onslaught twice as hard.

Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich’s emotionally-charged script showcases the charisma of Smith, who commands the screen alone for most of the picture (aside Abbey, a talented German Shepherd). Director Francis Lawrence (CONSTANTINE) uses music minimally, wisely allowing the eerie cityscapes to remain mostly silent. The set pieces, including an overgrown, deserted Times Square and a lion hunting a deer in the Flatrion District, are goosebump-inducing moments of stark beauty. Though some may question the rendering of the monsters in CGI instead of using actors, it does allow them to be frighteningly acrobatic. A chilling and effective adaptation of a horror classic, I AM LEGEND is also a thought-provoking piece of Hollywood filmmaking

Alone at the bottom of the food chain

Usually I will read the book first but in this case seeing the trailer being played over and over stimulated my curiosity to the point of no return. Being a New Yorker made the whole experience really fun and interesting; recognizing sights I pass on my way to work every day with an eerie feeling of abandonment was something totally different. I would often think in my head about how crowded it gets and how I wish people would just go away but seeing it all empty and overgrowing with grass like a wild safari was worse than I could have imagined. I guess its better the way it is than suffering eternity alone the same way Robert Neville has.

Alone except for the companionship of Samantha, the loyal German Shepherd, Neville is hunting wild deer and gathering food growing amok through the city while punctually seeking shelter as soon as the day light ends. When darkness approaches so do the mutated bodies that were once human but now reduced to vampire like creatures who savagely will hunt and devour any living creature. His only mission left is finding the cure than can turn the beasts back into the living before he goes mad form being alone. Things start going wrong when Neville stops being the hunter and starts becoming the hunted, the dark alleys that look ominous contain something that is keen ob bringing him down. His daily routing gets disturbed and he can no longer live peacefully with the hopes of one day saving everyone, he needs to find the cure fast or he too will succumb to the dire fate that all others have met.

Visually stunning the movies makes you care for Neville, who was very well portrayed by Smith. He was alone but not overly distressed or crazed, he exercised, rented videos, cooked, watched Shrek and tried to stay as close to being sane as possible. The scary parts made me jump and yell at the TV the same way guys do when they watch sports but overall it was a fun and wild experience and it really made me want to read the book to see what the original idea for this story was. I wish there was less CG effects these days but so many movies are full of them that one can’t not see them for just this one reason. Other than that this was a real blast and I will want to see it again soon.

Based on Steven Gould’s critically acclaimed novel, JUMPER leaps onto the screen courtesy of director Doug Liman. David (Hayden Christiansen) has inexplicably been given the power to teleport himself, or jump. He can jump into a bank vault, then to the top of the Sphinx, then back to his luxury Manhattan apartment. But despite all his power, he still misses his childhood love, Millie (Rachel Bilson, THE O.C.). When the opportunity arises, David jets off to Rome with Millie, but it’s not all romance in the Italian city. David’s unique abilities place him in the middle of a war between the jumpers and the paladins, a secretive group intent on hunting down the teleporters. Led by Roland (Samuel L. Jackson), the paladins track David and fellow jumper Griffin (Jamie Bell) across the world, and Millie may be caught in the crossfire.

JUMPER moves as fast as its teleporting hero, condensing the novel into a slim, action-packed offering. The slick special effects and impressive locations are certainly on par with Liman’s previous work in THE BOURNE IDENTITY and MR. AND MRS. SMITH, but JUMPER bears a closer resemblance to comic book adaptations. Like Spider-man and most other costume-clad protagonists with unearthly abilities, David grapples with his newfound talents. But unlike his tights-and-cape-wearing brethren, David doesn’t use his ability for the greater good. Instead, it gets him piles of money and, perhaps, the girl he’s been dreaming of since he was five years old.

Though most action films are driven by the struggle between good and evil, JUMPER interestingly offers up a central character who lies somewhere in the middle. Slightly less ambiguous is the film’s ending that leaves the option for a sequel completely open.

Good, fun movie

I went to see Jumper with some of my family when it was released, and I have to say I enjoyed it very much. I’ve liked Hayden Christensen since I saw “Life as a House,” and Samuel L. just rips up a villain role like nobody’s business. The special effects were very well done and I was delighted to find that the main storyline they implied in the commercials is NOT what happened! Sure, the main character can teleport, but the rest…. The movie is billed as scifi/thriller type, but that’s a bit misleading. This is more like the Highlander films, a fantasy element in the real world.

The movie was pretty fast paced with only a couple slower moments, and the character’s self-exploration once he discovers the ability was almost as good as Peter Parker’s in the first Spider-Man movie. Actually, in one way it was better. Peter uses his power to win a wrestling match and then jumps right into the hero role. Our similarly-aged jumper, however, jumps right into a bank vault, and a store, and…! *grin* He really is an ordinary person with an extraordinary ability. He used his ability for theft, but also for taking his surfboard to Fiji for the best waves. I like dthe movie enough that I quickly ordered the book. They are COMPLETELY different, but both good for different reasons. The movie added a opposing force for jumpers (i.e. a “villain”) whereas in the book, David mostly battles his own inner demons (with a lot of introspection). Plus, the very cool character of Griffin was completely made-up for the film. His character adds a some action while giving viewers another jumper to identify with besides David. Though the movie had closure, they left it wide open for a sequel that I really hope gets made.

I think some viewers are overly critical of this film. It’s not going to win any oscars, but I was entertained and that’s the most important criteria.
